Buddhist Service
Our temple services are rooted in the spiritual traditions of Nichiren Shu, a school of Buddhism founded by the 13th-century priest, Nichiren Shonin, during Japan's Kamakura period. Through his studies of the sutras and practice, Nichiren Shonin came to recognize that the teachings of the Lotus Sutra held the greatest wisdom and relevance for the challenges of our time, now centuries after the passing of Shakyamuni Buddha. His insights continue to guide us today, offering a timeless path to peace, compassion, and liberation from suffering in our modern world.
Our services are centered around chanting the sacred title of the Lotus Sutra, Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, which means, "I devote myself to the Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma." With each pronouncement, we make a heartfelt vow to honor the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and awaken the highest potential within ourselves, one another, and the world around us. It is a vow to see the good in each other, cultivate peace within our hearts, and restore harmony in our relationship to the land. In this simple yet powerful practice, we create a space where love, compassion, and understanding reveal the truth of our true nature and the interconnectedness of all beings.
Join us for our Monday evening Buddhist service, happening online from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome. Just email us at gekkaji@gmail.com for the meeting link. We are happy to have you!
